Glen Brand

Glen Brand is one of Iowa State's most prolific wrestlers. He won 51 of 54 career bouts as a Cyclone, pinning 30 of his opponents. Brand was the first Iowa State athlete to win a gold medal in Olympic competition.

Brand pinned all but one of his regular-season opponents in his freshman season in 1946. He earned third place at the NCAA meet at heavyweight. As a sophomore, Brand finished second at the NCAA meet at 175 pounds in just his second loss of the year.
The Cyclone star wrestled through 1948 without a blemish, compiling an 11-0 mark. The junior threw six straight opponents to earn conference and NCAA titles at 175 pounds. His triumph made him Iowa State's first three-time All-America wrestler. Brand's strong junior season earned him Iowa State's Athlete-of-the-Year honors.
Brand qualified for the 1948 Olympic team, defeating eight straight opponents at the Olympic Trials. At the London Games, Brand defeated Erik Linden of Sweden to become the first ISU athlete to earn an Olympic gold medal, winning the 174-pound class.
Brand sat out the 1949 wrestling season with a shoulder injury before returning for his final season in 1950. After a 7-0 start, Brand's amateur career was ended with an appendectomy. He had compiled a 35-match winning streak prior to the surgery.
Before coming to Iowa State, the Clarion, Iowa, native served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 33 months, including 19 months in Guam and the South Pacific.
